Foreign travelogues from the Qajar period reflect a particular gender order that was closely connected to, and largely consistent with, the traditional social discourse of the time. Within this gender order, and under the influence of social, economic, and cultural conditions, women occupied a marginal and subordinate position. The dominance of patriarchal structures significantly restricted women's capacity for social agency and confined them to specific behavioral patterns and socially prescribed roles. This study examines the gender order and the discursive position of women during the Qajar period through the narratives presented in foreign travelogues. By drawing on the accounts of foreign travelers, it offers a relatively underexplored perspective on women's lives in Qajar Iran, thereby contributing to the originality of the study. Employing historical narrative analysis within a descriptive-analytical framework, the research seeks to answer the following question: How did the gender position of Iranian women shape their lives and confine their social agency within specific frameworks? The findings indicate that foreign travelogues from the Qajar period portray women as occupying a position shaped by a distinct gender order. This order was influenced by power relations, established social and cultural values and norms, and the dominance of patriarchal structures in everyday social relations.
