The Tabriz Association, as one of the central institutions of the Constitutional Revolution, played a significant role in advancing the goals of constitutionalism and organizing resistance against despotism. Using a descriptive–analytical methodology, this study examines the performance of the Tabriz Association from its establishment to its dissolution through the lens of the satirical newspaper Molla Nasreddin. It seeks to explain both the functioning of this institution and the limitations and challenges that prevented it from evolving into a fully democratic body.
An examination of the intellectual trajectory of Molla Nasreddin’s editors toward the Tabriz Association reveals a dual attitude: despite the newspaper’s firm support for the ideals of constitutionalism, its rejection of political and religious despotism, and its strong defense of the Tabriz resistance, it adopted a critical stance toward the Association’s practices and administrative developments. This critical paradigm became especially pronounced after the capture of Tehran and the end of the Tabriz resistance.
The main points of criticism concerned the nature and composition of the Association’s members, the excessive concentration of power within it, its negligence, shifts in conduct and the adoption of conservative policies, corruption within revolutionary bodies, regression, and the emergence of a new form of despotism following the fall of the previous one. The performance of the Tabriz Association demonstrates that in a turbulent society, the transition from traditional governance to modern institutionalization—if not accompanied by legalism, administrative order, and structured institution‑building—can render revolutionary achievements fragile.
