Alongside the significance of Jahān-gushā-yi Juvayni in understanding the Mongol era, the English translation of this challenging text has played a pivotal role in advancing Iranian and Mongol studies. Part of the difficulty in interpreting and translating this work stems from the author’s bureaucratic style of expression and the use of administrative terminology. Thus, this study seeks to answer the following question: What approach did John Andrew Boyle adopt in translating administrative vocabulary? The research demonstrates that the translator employed three main strategies: historical equivalence, descriptive translation, and, ultimately, transliteration. The first approach was the most prevalent; however, due to linguistic limitations, Boyle also resorted to descriptive translation through explanatory phrases, as well as transliteration with accompanying footnotes. Ultimately, this study reveals that, apart from a few exceptions, the translator achieved an accurate understanding of administrative terms in both his interpretation and rendering of them.
