The Foroughi family held a distinguished and enduring position in the fields of culture, knowledge, and politics in 19th and 20th century Iran. Foroughi played a significant role in laying the groundwork for the Constitutional Revolution through the publication of the newspaper Tarbiyat over the course of a decade. In this newspaper, the names and works of prominent French thinkers, intellectuals, and writers were introduced to Iranians for the first time. Foroughi's sons, Mohammad-Ali and Abolhassan, also made significant contributions to the promotion of knowledge and culture. Mohammad-Ali created lasting works, including his “History of Philosophy in Europe,” which, along with some of his other writings, was influenced by the ideas of French philosophers. Abolhassan played a key role in shaping modern education in Iran through the establishment of the Darolmoallemin-e Markazi (Central Teacher Training College) in 1918, where French teachers taught alongside Iranian educators. Mohammad-Ali Foroughi's children, particularly Mohsen Foroughi, also contributed significantly to disseminating and promoting French culture in Iran. Reflecting on Iran's backwardness in relation to modern civilization, the Foroughis sought ways to advance and modernize the country. They worked diligently to influence the spread of new culture and civilization in Iran, as they regarded France as the cradle of modern science and culture, and were deeply attached to it. Through various means, they sought to expand and promote French culture in Iran. This essay aims to explore the issue of Iran's backwardness from the perspective of the Foroughi family and examines their contributions to the development of a new culture and civilization in Iran through a descriptive-analytical approach.
