Gemstones played a significant role in the commercial relations of the Ilkhanid and Timurid periods. In some regions, markets developed around these valuable stones. The widespread use of gemstones among the general population—especially the elite—coupled with the relative stability and security of these periods, facilitated the growth and expansion of the gemstone trade. This study aims to examine the status of gemstone trade under the Ilkhanids and the Timurids, drawing on historical sources. The research has been conducted using a descriptive-analytical method, with data collected through library-based research. The findings indicate that several factors contributed to the prosperity of this trade, including the quality and variety of gemstones, strong demand in both domestic and foreign markets, Iran’s strategic location along major trade routes, and the role of specialized merchants in setting prices. Although certain gemstone mines were lacking, Iran was rich in turquoise and pearls, which not only satisfied domestic demand but were also partially exported. During the Ilkhanid period, the gemstone trade was especially active in the western regions of Iran, while in the Timurid era, it flourished in the eastern regions. Most of the pearls harvested in Baghdad during the Ilkhanid period were graded and prepared for export. In the Timurid era, gemstone trade was prominent in cities such as Tabriz, Soltaniyeh, Samarkand, and Herat, with Samarkand and Herat holding particular significance. During this time, gemstone imports took place in Samarkand, while artists and craftsmen in Herat were key players in the industry.
