The issue of citizenship has garnered significant attention since the Qajar era, largely due to the expansion of international communications and diplomatic relations between countries. A notable factor influencing citizenship was the prevalence of intermarriage between citizens of different nations. This research aims to elucidate this dimension of Iran-Ottoman relations during the Qajar period. Utilizing library resources and archival documents from Iran, the study explores the implications of Iran-Ottoman interactions for citizenship, particularly in the context of cross-national marriages. Specifically, it addresses the impact of these connections on both countries and examines the responses of the Iranian and Ottoman governments. The findings indicate that during this period, the geographical proximity between Iran and the Ottoman Empire facilitated extensive interactions between their governments, resulting in numerous cross-national marriages. These marriages frequently generated tensions between the two nations. Throughout this era, the Iranian government consistently endeavored to address the issues arising from these unions, while the Ottoman Empire, with considerable interests at stake, tended to downplay the significance of these matters.
