Abstract

Yazd Jame Mosque is an architectural masterpiece that has evolved continuously throughout various historical periods, including the Timurid era. Many scholars consider it one of the prominent works of the Timurid period. Simultaneously, during the Timurid era, the Turkmen rulers of the Qara Qoyunlu dynasty were in power in the western and central regions of Iran. Tabriz Mozaffarieh Mosque stands as the most significant architectural artefact from this period, albeit with considerable ambiguities surrounding its architectural style. Limited sources have addressed the distinguishing features between Turkmen and Timurid architecture, with many categorizing Turkmen architecture under the umbrella of Timurid architecture. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to conduct a comparative study Tabriz Mozaffarieh Mosque and Yazd Jame Mosque to answer the following question: In which aspects of these two prominent mosques do their differences and commonalities manifest?
Identifying shared elements between these mosques may shed light on the presence of Turkmen and Timurid architectural commonalities, strengthening the theory of Iranian authenticity in the Mozaffarieh Mosque. On the other hand, discerning the differences between the two mosques will provide insights into the subtle distinctions between Turkmen and Timurid architectural styles, an area that has yet to receive comprehensive scholarly attention.
The research results reveal structural similarities in the plan and dome configuration of Mozaffarieh Mosque and Jame Mosque. However, the hierarchy of spaces, including the sequence of the iwans, porches, and domes, in Mozaffarieh Mosque is unique compared to other Timurid structures.
