English travelogues and French travelogues of the Naseri era present a multilayered and non-uniform image of Iranian women, shaped by factors such as class, ethnicity, religion, geographical region, and lifestyle. Using qualitative content analysis and a comparative-critical approach, this study examines several key travelogues from this period and poses the following main question: How, and with what differences, did English and French travelogue writers represent Iranian women based on the aforementioned factors, and to what extent was this representation influenced by Orientalist discourse? The findings show that, contrary to common stereotypes, the “Iranian woman” was not a homogeneous concept in this period. Nomadic and rural women enjoyed greater freedom of action and a more significant economic role, while upper-class urban women, despite literacy and material comfort, were defined within a more restrictive andaruni (domestic sphere) framework. Moreover, a comparison of the English and French travelogues indicates that the French adopted a more anthropological and detail-oriented perspective, whereas the English took a more political-colonial and critical approach to the condition of women. The article concludes that the representation of women in these texts reflects the social plurality of Naseri-era Iran, but was always accompanied by the cultural and value-laden biases of the authors.
