The Iraqi school of historiography is considered one of the most important traditions of Islamic historiography during the early Islamic centuries. It developed primarily in the two prominent cities of Basra and Kufa. Its methods, themes, and historiographical content distinguished it from the Medinan school, another major tradition of early Islamic historiography. The akhbari method, along with themes such as Ayyam al-Arab and Ansab al-Arab, both of which were deeply rooted in Arab tribal culture, constituted some of the defining features of the Iraqi historiographical tradition. In addition to the influence of the emerging Islamic culture, the methods of compilation, as well as the themes and content of historical writing, were shaped by the tribal structures of Basra and Kufa, the oral traditions inherited from the pre-Islamic period, and the cultural heritage of non-Muslim peoples. Abu Mikhnaf, Abu al-Hasan al-Mada'ini, Abu Ubayda Mu'ammar ibn al-Muthanna, and al-Haytham ibn 'Adi were among the most prominent representatives of the Iraqi school of historiography. This school was influenced by the methods and themes of pre-Islamic Iranian historiography while, in turn, exerting an influence on Iranian historiography during the Islamic period. This article examines the formation and development of the Iraqi school of historiography, with particular emphasis on its relationship with the Iranian historiographical tradition before Islam and with Iranian historiography during the early Islamic centuries.
